The Royal Institute of British Architects has announced the shortlist of six buildings competing for the 2022 Riba Stirling Prize.
These six projects have been selected from educational, cultural and residential buildings designed with sustainable social benefits to showcase the exceptional power of architecture to improve lives.
Simon Alford, chairman of Riba, praised the projects for their environmentally conscious approach, saying: “As we grapple with the housing, energy and climate crises, these six projects inspire optimism, each with innovative solutions. for today’s and future challenges. From major capital regeneration programs to new visions for higher education, they all aspire to deliver generous architecture fit for a low-carbon future.”
The four shortlisted designs provide new spaces for interaction and learning in formal and informal settings, such as schools, colleges and community centres. The other two are new housing developments that set the benchmark for investment in high-quality, desirable townhouses. With a focus on environmental impact, these projects are recognized for their construction’s responsibility to mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis, from the reuse and upgrading of existing buildings, to the conscious specification of low-carbon materials and technologies, to thoughtful hybrid design.
This award, which is named after James Stirling, an architectural engineer, has been presented annually to the most honored British architect since 1995 and is considered the most prestigious award in the field of architecture in this country.
The winner of the 2022 Riba Stirling Award for the best architecture of the building year in England will be announced on October 13.
